How Can severe Hemicrania Continua Headache Be Treated?

I suffer from a chronic migraine that resists to every treatment. I think that my neurologist diagnosed an hemicrania continua atypical. She is planning to treat me at the hospital next month for at least a week, she would use mainly IV DHE. If ergotamine works well for me, would I be able to manage the use of that drug myself or is it too dangerous? What substitute could I expect to be prescribed then? I thank you in advance for a your answer. Lorraine Riopel

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I have read your query, hemicrania continua can be a literally debilitating condition which can cause a very severe headache. I hope you have undergone something called as "INDOTEST" to label it as atypical.

Treatment:
1) Most hemicrania continua can be treated with NSAIDs such as Indomethacin.
2) In resistant cases, an occipital nerve block can be preferred.
3) Occipital nerve stimulation also proved useful.

Discuss with your neurologist for the right option for you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
